Part-time Professional Counselor

Location

Guaynabo, Puerto Rico

Job Summary

The professional counselor will provide a range of counseling services to the students including:  mental health assessment and counseling, personal crisis management, facilitating referrals to specialized mental health services, career guidance, and other support services related to the students’ success in the academic program. The counselor will also serve as a member of the overall staff team at the Puerto Rico site. Reports to the Director.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop a range of counseling services for the students at the Puerto Rico campus uniquely supportive of the needs of our working adult population.
  • Serve as the primary provider of counseling services to the students at the campus.
  • Support individual students with crises/stressors that interfere with academic performance.
  • Assess and refer serious and urgent emotional, psychological or psychiatric conditions of individual students to specialized mental health professionals in the region.
  • Develop a network of providers to whom students can be referred.
  • Plan, coordinate and deliver preventive workshops in mental health and academic achievement’s matters.
  • Plan, coordinate and deliver group activities, group counseling and support groups assistance.
  • Support students when preparing their course schedule as needed.
  • Support students with career development and job placement.
  • Working with the Puerto Rico staff and faculty to ensure that students are aware of the range of counseling services that are available.
  • Plan and coordinate delivery of counseling services with the support of other staff members and the site faculty.
  • Support site staff with the local activities enhanced by the CC strategic plan.
  • Ensure that the clinical files of students are kept in a safe file separate from all other academic records.
  • Works flexible hours, including weekends and evenings.

Education and Experience Required

  • Master Degree in Counseling required
  • Updated professional counseling certification from the PR Department of Health
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in professional counselor positions at higher education institutions

Skills and Knowledge Required

  • Spanish and English  oral and written language proficiency
  • Trained on crisis intervention
  • Ability to communicate and maintain systematic, coherent expectations with all constituents.

Physical Effort Required

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit. The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk, hear, and effectively communicate with others in person and in writing. The employee is required to be mobile. The employee must be able to occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include the ability to see others and read documents.  This job requires the employee to spend lengthy periods of time performing computer assisted work. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
